Deborah’s practice is devoted to both trial and appellate work. She appears regularly in the Alberta Court of Appeal, and has appeared numerous times in the Supreme Court of Canada. She represents both individual and corporate clients facing criminal and quasi-criminal matters such as Criminal Code, environmental, and regulatory charges.

Deborah has sat on the Law Society of Alberta’s Criminal Practice Advisory Committee and the Law Society of Alberta’s Credentials and Education Committee. She served as President of the Criminal Trial Lawyers’ Association in 2009-2011.

She has provided media commentary in relation to criminal justice issues, and frequently advocates for a properly funded and independent Legal Aid system, and the humane treatment of disadvantaged persons within the criminal justice system.

Deborah has served as an instructor and guest lecturer at the University of Alberta Faculty of Law, the National Judicial Institute, the Canadian Bar Association’s Criminal Justice Subsection, and the Legal Education Society of Alberta’s Intensive Advocacy Seminar. She has served as a Director of the Canadian Council of Criminal Defence Lawyers since 2012. Inducted as a Fellow into the American College of Trial Lawyers in 2018.
